"My motivation for this work came from one of the great influences in my life was my great grandmother “Muna” who was the matriarch of our family. From a very young age, I can remember her organizing. One of the most iconic family stories is of her organizing a bus trip for folks to get from Brooklyn, New York to Washington, D.C. to join the Civil Rights March in August of 1963.
Muna was a housekeeper for wealthy white people, yet she ensured that people who were thought of as “less-than” were able to make it to Washington DC to have their voices heard. She left an incredible legacy for her family and an indelible imprint all of those neighbors in Bedford Stuyvesant who joined her on the bus. Over 50 years later, I carry on her legacy.
I stand on the shoulders of giants, like Muna – the mass of ordinary people behind the movement to make equity, diversity, and inclusion a reality."
